What is the Difference Between a LLC & a PLLC for Your Private Practice?

LLC stands for Limited Liability Company, and PLLC stands for Professional Limited Liability Company. The main difference between them is that a PLLC is a specific type of LLC that is designed for licensed professionals, such as doctors, lawyers, accountants, and architects, who want to form a business entity that provides personal liability protection for the owners while allowing them to maintain their professional licenses. In most states, PLLCs are required to meet certain additional requirements and restrictions compared to regular LLCs. For example, PLLCs may need to be owned only by licensed professionals, or they may have to designate a licensed professional to be responsible for the professional services provided by the company. Additionally, the PLLC may need to be registered with the state licensing board, and the owners may need to follow certain ethical and professional standards. Contact your Secretary of State and also your Board of Nursing to see which one you will need to start up your private practice.

Overall, the main difference between LLCs and PLLCs is that PLLCs are designed specifically for licensed professionals who want to form a business entity that provides personal liability protection while still allowing them to maintain their professional licenses and conform to professional standards.
